Powerless
Lauren Roberts' Powerless is a dazzling escape into a realm where the extraordinary is the norm, yet it’s the ordinary that steals the show. Paedyn, an unassuming girl, who hides a secret of having no magical abilities, amidst a gallery of power-wielders, is catapulted into a royal contest that threatens not only her life but the delicate balance of her kingdom. Kai the prince of Ilya and the enforcer of the crown, whose job it is to hunt down any persons without magic, becomes her greatest ally in this very dangerous game. What will he do if he ever finds out her secret?
The enemies-to-lovers trope sparks like fireworks between Paedyn and Kai. Observing their initial tensions evolve into something tender is delightful! The chemistry crackles, and each interaction is layered with tension that keeps you flipping pages like a caffeine-fueled sorcerer. And did I mention Kai’s brother Kitt, the soon to be King also has the thing for Paedyn? How can she choose? And with the rebellion beginning, why would she bother with either?
Roberts’ writing is a whirlwind. She builds a world bursting with political machinations and vibrant details that draw readers into the conflict. Despite a few moments of repetition that may echo like a catchy song stuck in your head, the overall experience is exhilarating and ultimately satisfying. Not to mention the beauty found in this book. If you read my posts you know I am a sucker for a well drawn world map, but these books also have alluring scroll-work and flowers on each beginning chapter page. My heart is full! 💖✨
And oh, that cliffhanger of an ending! It’s a heart-stopping moments that will make you gasp and perhaps throw the book (lovingly, of course), as you mull over theories for the impending sequel, Reckless, which is out and you can dive right into. The follow-up to this deviation is just as yummy and ends on yet another final note that will leave you reeling! Unfortunately, book 3 won’t be out until possibly April of 2025, so read slooooowly my friends.
In a nutshell, Powerless is a must for YA fantasy lovers and those who adore a good dose of romance in their dystopia. With engaging characters, a plot that twists like a well-woven spell, and an end that leaves you wanting more, this book is a spellbinding ride that will keep you transfixed from start to finish!
