Spark of the Everflame
I am currently deep into the 3rd book of The Kindred Curse series and love it SO much I couldn’t wait to post a review of the first book. Penn Cole's “Spark of the Everflame’ is a captivating blend of world-building, character development, and a tantalizingly super slooooooow burn romance.
The novel introduces us to a world divided between the mortals and the powerful, magic-wielding Descended. It’s a fascinating dynamic that sets the stage for a complex and intriguing tale.
Cole's world-building is truly exceptional in this book. The way the author creates a vivid tension between the oppressed mortals and their tyrannical rulers is truly remarkable. It weaves a rich tapestry of societal tension and rebellion that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
I found myself easily getting lost in the pages, thanks to Cole's skill in making the world relatable and easy to understand. The magic system introduced in the story, while mysterious in the first book, adds an intriguing layer to the overall narrative. Its exciting to see how it develops and become more complex as the series progresses and our MC Diem learns more about it.
Character development is another strong point. Diem, our spirited protagonist, who is a little stab happy, but a real badass who can back it up, is a compelling figure. She evolves throughout the story, revealing layers of strength and vulnerability. Her journey of self-discovery is both inspiring and relatable.
However, the novel's greatest strength might also be its biggest challenge for some readers: the slow burn romance. While the tension between Diem and the enigmatic MMC is palpable, their relationship develops at a leisurely pace. So leisurely that I’m in book 3 and so thirsty! But their flirtations banter and his possie of friends make it so worth the wait. This can be frustrating for those craving immediate gratification, but it also builds a strong foundation for a potentially explosive connection in future. 🎆🤞
Overall, Spark of the Everflame is a remarkable start to a series that has the potential to become truly epic. With its well-crafted world, compelling characters, and simmering romance, this book is a must-read for fans of fantasy who appreciate a more deliberate storytelling pace with amazing character banter.
